Susquehanna Fly and Spin Fishing Report for the Susquehanna River April 13, 2010

With morning and mid day rain clearing out for my evening charter the sun opened up the skies and the big smallies mouths for my 2 anglers today. The Smallmouths are feeding well and have been eating a mixture foods that the river provides this time of year. The past weeks through spring have been excellent for you fellow fly fisherman out there as well as we have seen the smalllies surfacing taking hatching flies. Remember to use proper catch and release and proper handling techniques especially this time of year. Get bent and sling some string with us while the catching is good !

KOINONIA GUIDE SERVICE SUSQUEHANNA FISHING REPORT 04/10/10

Hi Gang,

The river was at 7.9 with 93,400CF of flow and 54 degrees at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week we had 5.2 with 36,000CF of flow and 58 degrees. The BP was 30.65 and steady.

1. Trip #1 – Guide Scouting Trip - This was on Monday and we fished from 2:00 – 6:00PM and we and we boated 29 Smallmouth and 2 Fallfish. The largest was 18.5” and we caught it on a Grub. We caught them on soft plastics and Stickbaits. We had 3 over 18”. We had 6.5 – Falling – Stained – 62,700CF and 59 – 64 degrees. It was sunny and mild with a BP of 30.30 and Rising.

2. Trip #2 – Guide Trip – This was on Wednesday morning and we extended the trip and we boated 22 Bass. The largest was 19.75” – 3.14# and we caught it on a Salty Spider Jig. We caught them all on soft plastics and we had 2 over 18”. We had 5.7 – Steady – 47,198CF – 63-67 degrees. It was sunny and hot with a BP of 29.85 and Steady.

3. Trip #3 – Guide Trip – This was on Thursday morning and we fished from 6:30 – 10:30 AM and we boated 7 Smallmouth. The largest was 15” and we caught it on a Salty Spider Jig. We caught all the fish on soft plastics. We had 5.4 – Falling – Stained - 42,597CF – 63-66 degrees. It was blue bird skies and warm with a BP of 29.80 and Falling. I do not know what the problem was. I am sure we were over fish but we could not trigger them. It was a poor moon phase for fishing.

4. Trip #4 – Guide Trip – This was a Saturday AM trip and we boated 16 Bass and 1 Flathead. The largest bass was 17” and we caught them all on soft plastics. We had 5.2 – Falling – Stained – 36,000CF – 58 degrees. It was sunny and extremely windy and we had a BP of 30.65 and steady.

5. Trip #6 –
No Trip

6. The extreme changes in water, depth, clarity and temperature has made the fishing inconsistent. With stable weather pattern I am expecting a good week next week as well as we have a better moon phase than we had at the end of this week.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK AND LUV THE TUG………REB

Support Your Local Rod Builder!

As Mike Kozlowski notes, “there is more to a custom rod than pretty wraps.”

Some rods are built for a specific purpose other than what they are designed for, such as a seven and a half foot ultra light built on a three weight fly blank, or a nine foot spinning rod for salmon built on a six weight fly blank. Some prefer fishing a Tennessee handle and can't get one on a rod they like. Some desire additional guides or guides placed in non-traditional places, such as a second large guide on a salt rod placed close to the first one. A lot of bass fishermen like to feel the blank on their rod and prefer open reel seats or cutouts for a finger. It all comes down to function and taste. A fancy wooden reel seat looks really nice, and the contoured ones feel nice in the hand. Does it give you an advantage? It depends on the individual. Most will say their hand is less tired at the end of the day. Don’t get me wrong, some people do order a specific rod that they can get other places, but it doesn't come in their team colors. Sometimes fancy is just good enough.

5. Trip #6 – No Trip

6. We are currently able to catch catfish in the daylight hours although the best fishing is towards evening. We are not getting the giants but we have caught them up to 14#. Now would be a good time to book a catfish trip if you want to fish in the day time.

7. The river conditions have fluctuated tremendously over the past week. The forecast is for stable conditions the next several days and the river will be dropping and clearing. I anticipate the bass fishing will get back on track this week and be very good.
